Wisdom

I’ve rarely found anything on this earth more pleasurable than a stroll in the moonlight on a cool evening, when the wind toys casually with one’s hair and the moon grins a Cheshire cat smile down on one, towards home and the lamp light playing on the golden page of a book. In the process of this saunter I took time to consider and examine a few things, the result of which was the following:
I can never be as much of a philosopher as one of my friends. He’s so dead set in his ways and I can’t do that. I think that true wisdom is seeing all sides of a debate. Having the knowledge to form an opinion and yet look at the matter from all sides. Not to rule out either as fundamentally unsound, but to listen and observe and—even if one holds firm to one’s opinion—to acknowledge that one does not know everything and that there is more on heaven and earth than is dreamt of in one’s own philosophy. It’s that element of open mindedness and the ability to understand or at least to try that makes one wise.

Furthermore, true wisdom doesn’t take it’s self too seriously in this way as well. If smiles and listens and trusts that there is a chance that whatever ideas it has could be completely false and this idea doesn’t scare it. How can it be terrifying if it is the human condition? Mortals are fools and always will be. The more we take ourselves seriously the more of a fool we act. The wise set back and except this and smile.

So what are the qualities of the wise? I have expounded on a few: humor, understanding (not only of those about him, but himself), and open mindedness. What else is there? A wise man must be able to listen with ears that are aware of their bias. He may not be at home amongst everyone, but he must be willing to listen. He also must be able to look around him and be amazed, amazed at man, but most of all at nature and wonder--wonder at the inconceivability of it all. Perhaps even at times to look up and wonder if perhaps there is something greater than himself…if only for that fleeting moment. Finally, he must be slow to anger, but his anger must be sincere.

I think what it comes down to is I am more of a bookworm, poet, and lover of life. Wisdom is not logic for me so much as it is understanding, which is rarely logical and clear cut. I hold a set of beliefs, which oppose many of the strong opinions of the Philosophers. However, I am more than content with this and I believe that this will lead me down the right path in life, when used in conjunction with my other codes.
